On-site simultaneous interpretation

In on-site simultaneous interpretation, the speaker talks into a microphone which is connected to a simultaneous translation console, allowing the interpreter to translate while the audience listens through headphones in real time.

Simultaneous on-site interpretation is carried out in soundproof booths where interpreters always work in same language combination pairs and take turns approximately every 30 minutes. It is the ideal translation method for congresses, conferences, symposia and seminars.

For short on-site meetings with less than 15 attendees held in small rooms, or facility visits, the use of portable simultaneous translation systems (Infoport) can be considered and does not require a booth or technical accessories.

Remote simultaneous interpretation

In remote simultaneous interpretation (RSI), the interpreters are in a different physical location from the speakers and the audience, and connect to the event virtually via an interpreting-enabled platform. If all event attendees are gathered in the same location, they can listen to the live simultaneous interpretation via their cell phones or traditional interpretation receivers, depending on the type of technical set-up chosen by the client. In the hybrid method, where some speakers and/or attendees are gathered at the event venue and others are connected online, the latter will be able to listen to the simultaneous interpretation through their computer. In the fully virtual method, in which speakers, attendees and interpreters are connected to the event online, the simultaneous interpretation will be heard through each one's computer.

This method eliminates the costs of travel, accommodation, per diem and interpretation booths.

In consecutive translation, the interpreter takes notes using a specialized technique while the speaker is talking. The speaker usually makes frequent pauses so the interpreter can translate the speech by fragments.

This modality can be used in press conferences, and short ceremonies. It does not require booths or simultaneous translation accessories, just microphones and a loudspeaker system.

Consecutive interpretation can also be done remotely, but it is not as common or advisable.

Liaison or commercial translation is used mainly in company meetings, factory and other facility visits or small committee negotiations.

The interpreter accompanies the attendees at all times and translates short fragments of the conversation. It does not require any technical equipment. Only applicable on-site.

In exceptional cases, if just one attendant needs translation, the interpreter may be seated next to them and whisper the translation in their ear in a simultaneous manner. Only applicable on-site.
